The Know Nothing Lament

The Know Nothing Lament a poem

These days I don’t know what to think.
The whole world’s gone to pot.
They find a man did one thing wrong?
He’s canceled and forgot.

Could she not let us celebrate
his talents in the theatre?
He wrote a script and followed through—
a bold, effective leader.

Can we erase our history?
Just leave the man alone!
Why couldn’t she let culture be
admired in her home?

It is a shame, to tell the truth.
In fact, I find it odd
the portrait of our John Wilkes Booth
was burnt by Mary Todd.
